Lay-offs suck

The company I work for laid off eleven employees today. It was a surprise (probably shouldn't have been, signs were there.. hindsight is 20/20). Looks like some of the employees weren't exactly the cream of the crop, so perhaps this isn't a completely bad thing...

Incompetent or not, it's still unnerving to watch your coworkers pack-up their desks under watch and get escorted out the door. Turns out their access accounts were turned off during our company lunch at noon and they were told right after lunch.

Made it through this round.. wonder how the next will go? If it happens...

I feel your pain.

Where I be working, Paradigm Genetics, we've had two rounds of layoffs in the last 8 months. It sucks. But what sucks more is being the guy that has to know ahead of time, since you are in charge of IT Security, and need to disable accounts and shut various things off.

What sucks even more, is when one of those people being let go is your peer, and you know 4 hours before they do. And you have to work with them for that 4 hours.

That was not a very good day.

When my last company blew up they told my office before they told our Boston office because the Boston office was in the middle of their Christmas party and they "didn't want to ruin the party for them".

I'm just glad I was lazy and hadn't done my xmas shopping.

My company will be having layoffs at the end of this week - the stress of not knowing and how to deal with it if I do get laid off is making me sick. For those who have gotten laid off - how did you cope ? I am afraid that I will be so depressed that I won't have the energy to look for a new job. Have you found new jobs yet ? I have a son in college and it will be tough making ends meet unless I get a job within a year.
