Yahoo messenger problems

This is on linux (obviously), v 0.99.19-beta.

Started it, signed on fine.. but couldn't see any text in IMs at all.. including my own. Nicknames, fine.. text, nada.

Restarted yim.. didn't help, next X, didn't help.. rebooted (oh, the humanity), nothing...

I got tad annoyed at this point.. installed a fresh version.. same problem.

Aha, those famous problem solving skills kicked in and looked inside . ymessenger.. hm, all the files (history.dat, menu.rc, messages.dat and preferences) had a size of 0. I guess something got corrupted and yim just doesn't handle that well.

Removed ~/.ymessenger/, reinitialized it.. (changed my yahoo password as I managed to forget it) and now works fine.

Annoying.

That's often the offical fix, believe it or not.

In other news, a new version is due out in about a week. Tons of bug fixes. I'm hoping we'll see an internal version RSN.

i think using yahoo messenger with all the bugs and it's unreliability of presence is not wrth our time and resources.i suggest u try icq,msn which though have their own problems, neverthless are more reliable than yahoo IM.

I just downloaded yahoo messenger 5.5, and everything was working fine. After 10 min of using it I moved my mouse arrow on top of my icons at the bottom right corner of my screen in the taskbar, and as soon as I did that, all my icons at the bottom just disappeared as I rolled over them. Initial config bails out with

on Mandrake Linux 8.1 (I know...I need to upgrade).

I was unable to save any preferences (among other problems)...kept getting the message:

"unable to write to 4Z@ð4Z@messenger/messages.dat"

Reinstalling did not solve the problem however, after reading messages here and learning about the files deposited by messenger, I checked the /root/.ymessenger/preferences file, and found the line:

ArchiveFile "ð4Z@ð4Z@messenger/messages.dat"

I edited it and made it read:

ArchiveFile "/root/.ymessenger/messages.dat"

Problem solved. Hope this helps somebody as you posts helped me find the file.

As soon as I log in, one guy chats with me asking me to talk dirty with him. As soon as I refuse he is able to log me off the yahho messenger (i get message "Ypager has caused an error in MYYAHOO.DLL, Ypager will now close". This means this guy is able to kick me off yahoo messenger whenever he wishes and I am at his mercy if I want to continue to be logged on yahoo messenger?

I have the most unusual yahoo messenger problem...I play trivia there and one day I noticed that every time I went to the room a name followed me in, right behind me...after going to that room several times, I noticed the same name was always right behind me, I asked in the room if anyone else could see that id and no-one could, only me but the person didn't type anything in the room...I then tried going to other rooms. it didn't follow me...it scared me a little so I wrote to yahoo to ask if it could be a yahoo glitch, they didn't comment on that, just told me to put the person on ignore...someone suggested I uninstall messenger so I did, installed it again and the ' ghost' had vanished, next day it was back again but this time a different name..always in the trivia room, the name changes daily, some days it will follow me into one triv room and not the other, sometimes it's one name in one room and a different name in the other, let me point out that I go in and out a dozen times to make sure I am being followed, a couple of days ago, a first happened, I was followed for a day by a name I actually KNEW...one and only time that has happened....I have uninstalled and reinstalled messenger at least five times, same thing happens each time, fine for a few hours and then followed again....no-one I've spoken to has ever heard of this and no-one has a clue as to what I can do about it...none of the ids have ever tried to contact me but I would still like to know if it'sa yahoo glitch or is someone doing this to me..thank you

messenger here's what helped me. I had the same problem even after uninstalling/reinstalling several times. I saw a small paragraph about downloading Internet Explorer 6.0 which was made to work exclusively with yahoo/messenger. It worked for me. Hope it does for you. Good luck.
