I'm going in

Installing gentoo on my desktop today.. so until that's done and over with I'm left with only a laptop as a tool of communication with the outside world.. (well, that and telephones, cars, humans, but those don't count).

If I don't come out in the next several hours, someone come and save me from pulling all my hair out. I don't think I'll look all that great with a big, red, bald head (red from all the hair pulling, see).

-- Update time --

One hour later: Still doing a backup.. what you thought I did that before anouncing a new install? Nah.. that would make too much sense..

8:15PM Started the prep process for compiling.. I wonder if this will be done by tomorrow on my dual 600mhz system..

10:30PM: bootstrapping finished and compiling began.. so that took about 2 hours 15 minutes.. this will take a lot longer.. probably 6+ hours..

8:00AM: It appears to have finished compiling over night.. tonight, kernel!

I think you'll love Gentoo. Make sure your using the 1.4-RC1 version, and make sure to customize your /etc/make.conf before building the system.

after you have a booting gentoo system with an SMP kernel remember to add MAKEOPTS="-j 3" to your /etc/make.conf. this allows for make to run more processes and effectively utilize your dual CPU's. As a side note your dual 600mhz system (running single PROC during the initial install (no SMP kernel in the install process) will probably bootstrap for 4-7 hours depending... (rought guestimate) (if you use a stage3 this time is reduced drastically) then figure another 8-12 for x+kde/gnome etc (from what i understand Xfree does not take advantage of SMP while compiling, sorry). It takes a while, but... if you give it an honest to goodness chance... i doubt you'll ever go back!! (slack used to be my distribution of choice, but now gentoo if my religeon!!!)

cheers :)

e-mail me if ya need any help/advice/anything

I've been considering using Gentoo lately instead of RedHat. I've heard great things about it, but not enough from actual users who use it as their primary, or close to primary, operating system. Can't wait to hear how it goes! (Especially with the dual 600mhz) :)

I use it as my primary OS. I love it :-).

It's my primary OS, and the OS on 5 servers I run. Its a GREAT OS! I cant begin to tell you how much I enjoy it! Redhat and mdk are nothing but frustrations to me -- while I can work on them, I would rather not.

I would have recommended getting the kernel compiling in the morning so that it was done when you got back from work, but that would only work if time constraints permitted

BTW stay away from the gentoo kernel. Use the vanilla one. Gentoo kernel is an unstable piece of crap.
