I went grocery shopping today. Since I live in the suburbs, that translates to visiting a large supermarket. As I was walking towards the store I noticed a black Mustang pulling into one of the handicapped spaces.. A young woman got out on one side and a five, maybe six year old boy from the other. Both very obviously not handicapped.
A minivan with a handicapped plate stopped dead in front of the mustang.. a man yelled out..
"Hey lady, you took the last handicapped space!"
I looked around, sure enough they were all taken.
The woman kept walking, didn't even make eye contact with the obviously annoyed driver of the van. The little boy turned around but his mom grabbed him by the arm and he trotted to catch up.
"Hey lady!"
They kept walking. I just stood there, I suppose I was hoping the woman would do something. Swear, yell, make eye contact, show some emotion.. Not even a shrug.
The man in the van yelled "I hope you get a hundred dollar ticket!" and pulled around the curb presumably to park way on the back where hopefully no cars will park next to him and block the wheelchair ramp. I walked into the store and dropped the requisite coins in the Salvation Army bucket at the entrance.

Next time use that change to dial up your local police or fire department (not 911) and tell them about this, they'll gladly send a squad car over and issue these idiots a summons.
In NY I think it's now something like a 130$ fine.
#Ah heck..... take the caps off the air valves, use your key to release the air in the tires.
Very little damage is done, and it makes the offending driver think twice (hopefully) before doing it again.
#Stooping to the level of some ignorant *&^! (or lower) really doesn't make the world a better place, does it?
The woman in question probably isn't going to make the connection between her doing something wrong and a vengeful act. If she's not going to modfiy her behavior by being confronted directly by someone who needs the spot, there's no way an act of vandalism is going to make an impact on her.
One can only hope the karmic circle takes over and she ends up in a wheelchair sometime really soon...
This is a HUGE button to press on me, so I won't even get into it. And an almost as large a button is the "stroller spaces" that I see in the mall - just because some people don't use birth control should NOT mean that they get better parking, but for this fine woman, I probably would have left a carriage ON the hood of the car.
#Yeah, malls catering to pregnant women who are likely there to spend a boatload of money on baby stuff. What a horrible idea. What would happen to this country if every company got the idea that catering to their customers was a good idea. Oh the horror of just thinking about it...
#Probably due to my jealousy of those that actually get such great shots, but I seem to notice those that park in the handicapped spots more than normal.
Half the time I see people jumping out of their handicap stickered car without any problem or disability. How do they get those stickers! I think that is just as abhorrent as some of those that take the risk...at least most of those people get fined.
#Randy:
Your parents didn't use birth control: you should thank them sometime.
No doubt you abhor having to stop while a schoolbus' red lights are flashing - it's the same deal. Children + moving vehicles = accidents.
I have no problem parking futher from the mall when I don't have my kids with me. But then I'm weird: I give up my seat on public transport to pregnant women and parents with young children.
Bah.

#Apparently Nassau county in New York state trains volunteers to use Polaroid cameras to take photos of illegally parked cars. Seems like that's a good solution, just allow people who are handicapped to carry Polaroid cameras and send in pictures of the vehicles.
When I lived in Illinois I didn't mind having people park in my assigned parking space (which I paid a hefty monthly sum for) because the towing company was more than happy to come by and remove the offending vehicles.
#Tyler, many times a person may have a stress activated conditions that prohibit walking long distances. Heart conditions seem to be the ones i hear the most about. But this case isn't really about how easy or difficult it is to get a sticker. This woman didn't have one. She just placed her own interests above those of the law.
My dad was wheelchair bound. So I know a little bit about people that are. And frankly, it's not the sort of thing I'd wish on someone for being an asshole. I know my father wouldn't. He would, however, park his big-ass van right behind her, making it impossible for her to get out. That never made my mom too happy, but he seemed to enjoy it.
#I just recently enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner with my mother. We spent the rest of the day running errands before I had to return home. During those stops I had to hang her handicap card on my rearview mirror and repeatedly felt all eyes upon me as we went from ideal parking and on into the stores. I do not look handicapped, and I am not. She does not look handicapped, but she is. I was so grateful that we could do these chores together. We had the card. That made all the difference.
I happen to agree with the idea of parking the huge-ass van right behind the vehicle that is not displaying the handicap sticker. Then go take a long break. Call the police, pull out the camera, and call a couple of friends. Eventually, the driver will be learning a valuable lesson: how to truly save time.
my two cents worth.

My philosophy on this has always been "stupidity isn't a handicap"
#oh no, not a hundred dollar fine that im sure is totally chump change to her... that guy is so threatening.
#It's Christmas time. The season of joy, thanksgiving and heaps and heaps of guilt. Fully half the donations to charities happen at Christmas. People are enjoying ... Well, they are enjoy "plenty" and "abundance" and feel guilty about it. Christmas...
