Useless polls
I suppose a statement "useless online polls" is a tad redundant.. but there it is anyway. Someone pointed out a poll to me today on hotscripts.com.. it's right there on the right hand side, just scroll down a tad. See it? That one..
What is your scripting language/platform of choice?
Doesn't appear all that useless, right? Until you see the options..
ASP
C/C++
CFML
Flash
Java
JavaScript
Perl
PHP
Python
XML
Other
XML? Java? C/C++? In a poll about web page scripting? (I assume they mean web page scripting considering their content). Is it not bad enough that half the newbies to web design claim they know Java after writing a 10 line JavaScript.. now websites that claim to be some sort of authority on scripting create a poll with this combination of uh, scripting languages? Get a clue.
Welcome to the misinformation super-highway.

Hrm. Well, if you take it loosely, there are embedded interpreters that allow one to create scripts in c & c++, however not for web sites. Hostcripts has been running that poll a long time now. What do think it suggests of those 1075 people that voted for c/c++? Or the 650 that voted for XML?

My daily mantra is "It's all right to be filled with hate, people are stupid"

@Arcterex: Now that's a fine mantra, mind if I borrow that?

I suppose it's ok to be filled with hate, but I really prefer to be filled with gin.

I assume that C/C++ means doing CGI stuff in C/C++ which is perfectly plausable, but rather unlikely.
Java, well JSP&(JavaBeans|EJB) -> Java... but then again Java !-> JSP+(JavaBeans|EJB). Valid choice, if you understand what it means.
But XML? Uh O.K. have to agree with that one.

XML actually does have a scripting language ( i think might be XPath), but overtly complex , in keeping with the overall suckiness of XML syntax in general.

I've read a bit about very usefull uses of C/C++ in CGI.. which isn't really scripting, cuz it is still compiled.. but.. it does have to do with web pages.. like Mark pointed out.. :)

Online Polls are worthless because they:
( ) are too narrowly defined
( ) allow for a self-selecting pool which results in a zero-credibility result
( ) are too broadly defined
( ) imply an agreement with the premise
( ) limit understanding
( ) none of the above
:-)
XML as an excution language, interpreted or compiled, looks painful:
