Kasia's law of cat and door dynamics
.. states that a closed door and a cat exert a gravitational force of attraction at each other. Due to this force an action of closing a door will produce a reaction of a cat scratching at it. The location of the cat in reference to the door (side a or b) is not relevant.

I imagine this is a child of your last post on the two (three?) that you have at home..
Just following your new law of cat and door dynamics..
if($cat == 'scratching_door')
{
wake_up_open_door_for_cat();
}
else
{
keep_sleeping();
}

Works with small canines as well from what I gather

Let me add: The distance and spatial location (near or far) of the cat in reference to the door is not relevant.

Definition (pace Ogden Nash).
Door: that object which a cat is perpetually on the wrong side of.

Kasia's Law does not apply to closet doors though. Rather the inverse applies. Open a closet door and it's safe to assume at least one cat has entered the closet and is hiding inside, even if you've maintained surveillance on the door and have not witnessed an entry by said cat(s).
