Lovely property for sale

Someone is attempting to sell property on ebay in Pennsylvania.. which is good and fine, except they chose to link to an image from my website that is decidedly not Pennsylvania.. I know, because it's one my photographs of the beautiful Lake Minnewaska in upstate NY.

Which probably means that the other images in the auction are also from someplace else... way to misrepresent the property to people.

Thanks to mod_rewrite, the auction is now also displaying a lovely beach front view.

Reporting it to ebay fraud is probably a good idea though (and I shall).

Edit: In case ebay takes the auction down (I did email them and if nothing else, I hold copyright to that image) I took a screenshot of the modified auction.. it's cute.

Edit^2: It appears neither ebay nor the seller care.. so thanks to some photoshopping courtesy of Steve we now have a better image.

Server hopping

My server was moved last night from equinix to PAIX.. all should be up and running now but some may notice I'm on a different IP.

(Same hosting company, just different data center).

If you're using line monitoring from dslreports, that also means the sjc-monitor IP has changed.

Journalism is a joke

We live in strange times. A school shooting overshadowed on the news by a case of a woman who is brain dead and should be allowed to die. One would have to live under a rock to escape reading and hearing about this one.. The only real news story here is that our government just made a really bad precedent by intervening in this case. I suppose state rights are for mere decoration and grandstanding takes precedence to constitution.

There is another news worthy item hidden in this messy story. One Dr William Hammesfahr. News stories like this one have been popping up left and right each inevitably quoting the "world renowned, Nobel Prize nominee in medicine". That made me wonder, how can it be that a neurologist of such standing as to be nominated for a Nobel Prize (no small achievement) is all but ignored by not only courts but also his own colleagues? This question let to a google search and in about 15 minutes, me, a programmer with too much time on her hands, was able to discredit the good doctor. Why is the news media even quoting this person?

You too can follow the bread crumbs and see the credibility behind the opinions.

Doctor Hammesfahr has a website, his own neurological institute and an impressive list of services. What he doesn't have is even one published peer-reviewed article in a medical journal. How does one receive a Nobel Prize nomination without ever being published? Good question! One doesn't.

According to the Nobel Prize FAQ the nominees are kept secret for 50 years. That means the nominees don't know they're nominated. So how did our doctor find out? He has a letter to prove it! From the Nobel committee? Well.. no.. from his local congressman to the Nobel Committee recommending Hammesfahr's nomination for the "Nobel Peace Prize in Medicine". No, there is no such thing as a Nobel Peace Prize in Medicine.

Feeling sick yet? All those journalists quoting the doctor (who's doing the talk show circuit right now) and referring to his Nobel Prize nomination are really referring to a letter from a Florida congressman who can't even distinguish between the Nobel Peace Prize and the Nobel Prize for achievement in the field of Medicine. And all it took was a 15 minute google search. Way to go "journalists".

In case you're still wondering if a letter like that has any validity as a nomination.. it doesn't. Here is a list of people who can nominate someone for the Nobel prize in physiology or medicine. A congressman is not on the list. This "nomination" means about as much as if I sent a letter to the same committe recommending Steve Friedl for the Nobel Peace Prize in Windows Reinstalling.

Perception

A co-worker and I were reminiscing about schools. We both went to state schools in CT: he to UConn, I to CCSU. The favorite topic of discussion about one's school days is of course, the really funky, weird, annoying, bad or just plain rude and obnoxious professors we had. I had one of those.. the obnoxious and rude kind. He either hated me or just my hair color - at any rate, he loved to pick on me in class and downgrade my work for any non-programming related reason possible. Although to be fair, he did that last one to everyone, but as far as I know, I'm the only one whose hair color he ridiculed in front of the whole class. Just one of those really nit-picky people with something to prove to all those young and fresh CS students. Back to my co-worker.. he mentioned a quirky, weird English professor he had at UConn who would climb on top of a table and disperse inspiration in a loud voice..

"Someone watched 'The dead poets society' one time too many!" - I said.
"Oh yah, heh" - giggle from the co-worker..
"Wait" - he added - "I think that *was* him in that movie"

Well, what do you know.. Sam Pickering, an English Professor at UConn was the inspiration for Robin William's character.

I suppose this goes to prove... one person's inspiration is another person's "weird English teacher"!

Clearchannel stations

Ever wonder just how many radio stations clearchannel owns in your area? I was almost right about CT, guessed 4 or 5, it's in reality 5:

email

Whenever you leave your email address out in public view you should expect to get email. The nice kind, the "help me out" ones and some strange ones.. I've yet to figure out how to classify this one other than "really funny one":

	From: nasrin_ofogh@yahoo.co.uk
	Subject: I have a question!
	Date: March 15, 2005 12:51:20 AM EST

Reclassification of spyware

We received a rather polite email today from cydoor to "please stop calling their product spyware. You can read the whole email in this article.. the part that amused me most is this:

In regard with your article, I would like to bring your attention to your categorization of our ad-serving technology as spyware#&46 I believe that this categorization is mistaken, and I would like to show you why. I would also like to request that you update your description of Cydoor to be a mild adware.

"Hi mom, how's your pc?"
"oh it has a mild case of adware.. I downloaded something for it"
"That's not bad then, it's only a *potentially unwated program*.."
"Yah, it's nothing, you should have seen the severe case of scamware ...'s computer had last week!"

Well then..

DDOS attack fun

dslreports has been under a massive DDOS attack.. a combination of synflood and bad requests. What's showing in image is actually not accurate, since the attack is much larger than this, but it should give you an idea of what we've been dealing with since last night.

My personal belief is the reason for this is our recent series of anti-spyware articles much like Ben Edelman experienced. I've no evidence to back that up but would love to compare logs.

Ever since I started posting logs of IPs that post spam on my weblog or spam my referrer log, I've been hit with regular trackback attacks. Daily and consistent. What's the relation to the dslr attack? IPs from attacks to my personal server and to the dslr servers are mostly hijacked, trojaned machines on comcast, sbc and other big providers. Big providers who are completely capable to detecting this kind of behaviour and cutting those customers off. Why aren't they doing it? Maybe because they are more concerned with spreading their legs for RIAA and catching small-time file traders instead of making sure their networks aren't used in massive DDOS attacks that take down legitimate websites who provide security resources for everyone?

What will it take to get Comcast to listen? Are you out there SBC?

Comcast cable customers will be kicked off their network and accounts closed if they get caught three times hosting filesharing. There is no similar provision for customers whose machines are used as part of a botnet. Why not? Why isn't this issue as important? Because websites like ours do not have the deep pockets to affect legislature? Because a customer that cannot secure his machine is more important than one who chooses to download movies illegally?

Every broadband customer should be held responsible for securing their machine and if they are incapable of doing so, they should not be allowed on a public network. And no, I can't afford to buy a few senators to make sure that this even gets discussed in a public forum outside of my weblog.

New words

List of words I used to think I made up but turned out to be in wide-use:

When I was about five years old I made up this terrific word game. It was fun, imaginative and occupied my mind for hours. One day, feeling particularly generous towards my (normally hated) older brother I decided to share it with him. You simply took the last letter of the first word that came to you mind and had to think up a word that started with it.. then took the last letter of that word, and so on. I bet he's still laughing at me for thinking I made up a game everyone else in the world already knew. Life is so rough sometimes.

Easy parenting with OSX

On the errant child's computer in the crontab of a logged in account:

* 23,0,1,2,3,4,5 * * * /usr/bin/osascript -e 'tell application "Finder" to sleep'

(It tells the computer to put itself to sleep every minute of every hour between 11pm and 5am.. of course if the computer is already asleep it doesn't do anything)

No wonder the world is full of wars!

Emptiness

It appears my blog is empty and considering that many people now have asked me about it - I guess I better get off my behind and write something!

I've been kind of busy: new job, consulting work, etc.. and a new project that I'll maybe write about later tonight.
