Journalism is a joke
We live in strange times. A school shooting overshadowed on the news by a case of a woman who is brain dead and should be allowed to die. One would have to live under a rock to escape reading and hearing about this one.. The only real news story here is that our government just made a really bad precedent by intervening in this case. I suppose state rights are for mere decoration and grandstanding takes precedence to constitution.
There is another news worthy item hidden in this messy story. One Dr William Hammesfahr. News stories like this one have been popping up left and right each inevitably quoting the "world renowned, Nobel Prize nominee in medicine". That made me wonder, how can it be that a neurologist of such standing as to be nominated for a Nobel Prize (no small achievement) is all but ignored by not only courts but also his own colleagues? This question let to a google search and in about 15 minutes, me, a programmer with too much time on her hands, was able to discredit the good doctor. Why is the news media even quoting this person?
You too can follow the bread crumbs and see the credibility behind the opinions.
Doctor Hammesfahr has a website, his own neurological institute and an impressive list of services. What he doesn't have is even one published peer-reviewed article in a medical journal. How does one receive a Nobel Prize nomination without ever being published? Good question! One doesn't.
According to the Nobel Prize FAQ the nominees are kept secret for 50 years. That means the nominees don't know they're nominated. So how did our doctor find out? He has a letter to prove it! From the Nobel committee? Well.. no.. from his local congressman to the Nobel Committee recommending Hammesfahr's nomination for the "Nobel Peace Prize in Medicine". No, there is no such thing as a Nobel Peace Prize in Medicine.
Feeling sick yet? All those journalists quoting the doctor (who's doing the talk show circuit right now) and referring to his Nobel Prize nomination are really referring to a letter from a Florida congressman who can't even distinguish between the Nobel Peace Prize and the Nobel Prize for achievement in the field of Medicine. And all it took was a 15 minute google search. Way to go "journalists".
In case you're still wondering if a letter like that has any validity as a nomination.. it doesn't. Here is a list of people who can nominate someone for the Nobel prize in physiology or medicine. A congressman is not on the list. This "nomination" means about as much as if I sent a letter to the same committe recommending Steve Friedl for the Nobel Peace Prize in Windows Reinstalling.

Not really what you're talking about I guess, but here's another article I'm sure your "open liberal mind" will enjoy.

Kasia - That was fantastic post. This, though, is simply one example of how people can be spoon fed anything and don't even have the desire to know where it's coming from.
Matt T. - No, your posted link has nothing to do with what was written. As a matter of fact, it just further shows the validity of what Kasia wrote. The same way that article spoon fed you the view of a "religious authority" is the same way mass media fed Congress and the people misinformation about this sad situation.
The simple fact at stake is Terri has NO brain activity and people with questionable credentials are trying to say otherwise for their own personal gain.

Congress has every right to intervene in this ccase. Here's an excellent explaination of the issue:

Congress does indeed have authority to intervene (they have jurisdiction over the Court system), but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a good idea.
But even if one supports what this intervention, one should not use a quack to bolster one's case: bad arguments are a great way to not be taken seriously.

Agreed Steve. Congress has the authority, but this is not a good idea.
All of this press, just to try to have a religious issue to drum up votes for the mid-term elections when the time comes.
This is all Political grandstanding.

Uh, if Terri has NO brain activity, how is she able to breathe, blink, maintain body temperature, ...?
Posted by: asdf | March 23, 2005 08:54 PM
adf, she's not technically brain dead which would actually lead to a complete shutdown of most functions (homeostasis is a partly chemical process, from what i understand). breathing and blinking are very primitive, and low-level.
the parts of her brain responsible for all of the functions that identify her as human are liquefied, according to the evidence given.
she can breathe on her own, manage saliva production, respond to light, etc. she cannot reason, does not have emotions and does not have a personality. essentially she is on internal life support.
i am a little uncomfortable about the lack of an MRI scan to prove the diagnosis, but i wonder if congress would be willing to relent, anyway, having seen irrefutable medical evidence.
the timing of this, and the role delay is playing stink of diversion. tens of thousands of people find them selves in the shiavo's position every year. why them? why now? could it have anything to do with certain ethics violations of which the ringleader is accused?
and if they are pushing 'the culture of life,' how about a push for universal health care? how about cheaper aids drugs and reproductive education for the third world? how about the bodies of women and children piling up in iraq?
there's a bit of a disconnect there, wouldn't you say?

Perhpas this is all a misdirection to keep the investigation of Delay out of the news.
I can't figure it out. I gave up trying to understand this administration a long time ago.

The Bush Administration makes a lot of sense.

Every court appointed doc has come to the same conculsion: The woman is in a vegetative state and she is not going to come out.
In a country that people will sue at a drop of a hat, don't you think that if this woman had any chance to recover that the doctor would give it a try? Don't you think they are going to have their bases covered in a case like this?
This is the religious right flexing its power. To the parents and the RR this is murderer. Some people don't understand that, just because science today can keep someone alive, doesn't make it always a good idea.

I guess. However, I don't even see the press thinking that the Dems have that much ammo in this case.
I still think the RR wants to have a drum to beat on during mid-terms.
Posted by: pbw | March 24, 2005 09:57 AM
pbw, i was just saying that if there was a stone left unturned, it would make sense to turn it just to make sure that every piece of evidence could be made available and acted upon.
my point is that congress probably DOESN't want that, because they don't want to undermine their own case (by congress, i mean the republicans).
the problem with the press and the republicans is that they're both pretending that the public is concerned about terri shiavo (they're not. the majority want's the plug pulled, and congress to butt out).
the dems don't need any ammo, because the press and repubs are shooting themselves in the foot.
Posted by: pbw | March 24, 2005 12:45 PM
I understand and I guess it helps, but if there is not much there to begin with I just don't see the press running with it that much.
Besides I don't think the story is really holding up investigating reporters.
PS HEY! Get your own name! :)

how the hell did that happen? :D

When they speak of "brain function," they are talking about higher brain functions, like cognition , learning, etc. Breathing, blinking and maintaining body temperature are autonomic functions that are controlled by the brain stem, an area that can function when a person is brain dead.

I'll be brave enough to admit that euthanasia should be applied to Terri. The human being is not present in this body any more.
