Flowery Beetles?
Is there some secret cabal composed of VW Beetle owners whose secret sign is to stick fake flowers behind the steering column? I believe I've seen about 30 examples of this in the last couple of years and every single one was a new beetle..

I think at one point the VW dealerships were putting fake flowers in all the new beetles they sold...

Also, remember that the new beetle actually includes in its design a "flower holder", so it's actually *intended* for that use.
Strange but true.

Okay, that certainly explains then!

I can confirm it: they come with new Beetles.
In fact, at the original launch they gave all of the salespeople a version of the "vase" made for the desktop. Was sorta cute, actually...

Yeah, it's standard on all the New Beetles....Since you bring up new beetles, I'd like to say that I think the cars look like fat pigs compared to the slender classic beetles. (being a classic beetle owner...i guess i'm biased...oh well) I don't think I've seen any classic beetles with flower vases in them lately.

Actually:
A bud vase, or the more common "blumenvasen", is an accessory for early German cars including VWs and Porsche and were usually mounted on the dashboard. They were used to hold cut flowers or "buds" and were usually made of glass or porcelain. Original examples are quite hard to find and very collectable, even though reproductions are currently available.
You can find more info and pics of the old ones here:

I have owned several Classic Beetles in my day, and only one had the "Bud Vase", and I sold it on ebay for $400. I have heard of them going for more than $1000 in perfect condition.
Wonder what kinda buds the sixties kids really put in them? ;)
